Let’s be honest, the job market is messy in 2025.
For job seekers, the frustration of sending a resume into the void, waiting weeks for a response (or never getting one at all), and endless applications are overwhelming. On the flip side, recruiters, HR professionals, and hiring managers struggle to fill critical roles while drowning in applications – many of which do not meet basic requirements. Everyone seems to agree on one thing: the hiring system is broken.
So how did we get here? And can AI help solve the problems facing our workforce and emerging professionals?
In my opinion, maybe. But this is a complicated, exciting problem to solve – and it won’t be a single technology that provides the solution. We have a lot going on: post pandemic labor shortages, layoffs, skills gaps, generational changes, and remote work. These are uncharted waters, and AI companies promise solutions to help us navigate them effectively. How can AI reshape the way we hire to create a more intuitive, human experience for jobseekers and employers alike?
Most of us interact with AI daily, even if we don’t realize it – and AI has been implemented in many companies’ hiring practices already. When you receive an automated email or take a skills test online, AI is probably involved in the workflow. Resume screening tools are frequently venerated and denigrated, in varying degrees online – R/Recruiting offers advice on how to “Beat the AI” and adding white text key words from job descriptions to one’s resume to beat the algorithm. Job postings often receive hundreds of applications; there’s no way a human can read all of those thoroughly and thoughtfully. Resume screening tools are here to stay – and it’s imperative that they are intentionally designed to fairly assess candidate resumes without bias. For job seekers, this means the importance of ensuring your resume aligns with the job description for the role you are applying to is greater than ever.
A lack of communication is a common complaint for both parties: candidates and companies are ghosted by each other, and there must be a better way to communicate effectively without losing the human touch. AI tools can help ease these very valid frustrations: job seekers should expect more frequent, automated communication: think interview scheduling bots, live time dashboards about their progress in the interview process, and more AI enhanced interview processes, like AI notetakers and bias checking algorithms.
Recruiters and hiring managers will benefit from automated scheduling as well, along with deeper analytics into hiring trends and compensation, and predictive insights into candidate behavior (like whether they are likely open to new opportunities). When designed thoughtfully and implemented well, AI tools can free up time for everyone and facilitate a better experience – faster interview processes, automated onboarding, less room for human error. Candidates have endless opportunities to leverage AI in their job searches and should take full advantage of them. You can use language tools to identify skills, analyze your resume, make target lists of companies in your industry, the possibilities go on. It is indisputable that AI is already reshaping the way we hire and find work, but what comes next?
Imagine building automation so intelligently it can predict how many and what kind of skilled technicians need to be hired, as well as predict future needs based on projected turnover and common failures. Optimized recruiting workflows will allow talent professionals to spend more time on what matters most – human to human interaction, instead of being bogged down in endless manual resume reviews and workforce planning. Workforce planning is being reshaped, and many time-consuming HR tasks such as payroll processing, onboarding kickoffs, and benefits enrollment are already seeing major changes as companies embrace AI tools.
As a candidate, these changes can create uncertainty about how to stand out and navigate the changing landscape of the job market in our modern age, but with education on how to use the tools available, the AI revolution presents a variety of solutions to ease the stress of job hunting. Tools such as AI powered job matching will continue to be refined, and job seekers will benefit from tools that provide real time updates when positions hit the job boards that match an applicant’s skillset and can take advantage of resume building tools designed to optimize one’s resume to highlight relevant skillsets. Instead of practicing your interview answers in the mirror, preparation tools will analyze your answers to common interview questions and provide real time feedback, as well as provide tips on how to improve your tone, nonverbal communication, and remove filler words.
Portfolio and personal branding have never been more accessible, and AI tools can quickly assist with building a personal website or optimizing a LinkedIn profile to ensure your profile shows up in the right searches. It is, however, imperative to combine a human touch with these helpful resources; it is still somewhat obvious when a resume is purely AI generated, or a candidate’s answers sound a little too perfect. Jobseekers who refrain from embracing AI tools may find themselves struggling to stay competitive with those who are taking full advantage of the technology available, much like during the early 1900’s when horse drawn carriages gave way to cars. Employers who do not adapt will also face significant consequences, such as potentially decreased productivity and difficulty attracting talent as jobseekers become accustomed to streamlined hiring processes and instant updates; or could be viewed by top talent as less innovative than competitors.
Ultimately, hiring is about connecting people – regardless of the industry, and we have a real window of opportunity to build better hiring systems, centered around fostering connection and cutting out the background noise, leading to better outcomes for employees, jobseekers, and businesses. The future is bright – and with well implemented AI tools, we can re-humanize hiring in a world starved for connection. The best part? This story is still unfolding, and we get to help write it.
